Who We Are

We are a local group of citizen advocates working to protect West Virginia's enviornment, culture, and heritage for future generations.

Mountain Lakes Preservation Alliance formed in February of 2014 during the Global Frackdown. We met at LaPaix Herb Farm, then owned by Myra Bonhage-Hale. We came from several different counties: Lewis, Gilmer, Upshur, and Harrison, and saw that we all had a common goal: to stop, or at least slow, the dreadful toll extractive industry, specifically the gas industry, was taking on our precious water resources and quality of life.
Several of us were already visiting our county commissions every week, so we decided to join forces and support each other in the imporant work of educating our public officials, our friends, and the general public about the dangers of fracking and pipelines.

We have recently achieved our 501(c)3 status, and are now able to receive grants directly and act as fiscal sponsor for smaller groups.

How we work

MLPA uses consensus-based decision making to make decisions. Read this document for more information on how CBDM works.

why we do it

Clean water, soil, and air are essential to a good quality of life.

We want everyone to have clean, fresh water, fertile soil we can cultivate, and clean, mountain air for generations to come. We want West Virginia to be a place people want to come to to work, retire, and raise families. We believe that extractive industry puts all this at risk. We want to change our public policy and diversify our economy into sustainable sources of energy and employment. We believe it can be done if we all join together. The fight will be long and difficult, but we believe West Virginia is worth saving.

our mission and vision

Mission: MLPA is a multi-county membership organization that promotes clean water and air, clean energy, landowner rights, public health and safety, and sustainable and inclusive economic development through education and advocacy.

Vision: MLPA envisions a state, nation, and world in which all citizens live in an environment in which they are entitled to and have access to clean and healthy air, water, and land, and a sustainable economic system in which no citizen is subject to exploitation, degradation, and/or marginalization for the sake of profit.
